Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion (20 years 145 days), and added the World Boxing Association title in 1987, when he beat James Smith (1954– ).

Later that year, he became the first undisputed champion since 1978, when he beat Tony Tucker (1958–). He won 41 of 42 decisions before losing the title in 1990 after he was knocked out by James "Buster" Douglas.

In 1992, Tyson was convicted of raping Miss Black Rhode Island, Desiree Washington, in an Indianapolis hotel room.  He converted to Islam and was released after serving three years.

By 1997, Tyson's career hit a low point when he bit Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight.  His boxing license was revoked for 15 months.
